Krishna Janmashtami is the Hindu festival celebrated as the birthday of Lord Krishna. The festival is celebrated on the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha on Bhadra month of Nepali calendar.
It generally falls on August-September of the Gregorian calendar. This year, Krishna Janmasthami is on Bhadra 20, 2080 ie 6th September 2023.
krishna Janmasthami is the public holiday in Nepal. People decorate Krishna temples with the regional flowers and leaves and recite Bhagavad Gita until midnight.
On this festive day, parents dress up their children as the characters of Krishna and Radha.
Krishna was born as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu on the eighth tithi (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in Bhadrapada Masa.
The festival is celebrated by the Hindu Nepalese and Indians all over the world. Particularly, the festival is observed in Mathura and Vrindavan and the Indian states Asaam, Bihar, Manipur, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Hindu people celebrate the Krishna Janmasthami by fasting, singing krishna songs, praying, preparing the special food (prasad), night vigils and Visiting Krishna temples. In some places, Rasa Lila or Krishna lila the drama dance is organized. People chant the Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Radhe Radhe, and Krishna Krishna Hare Hare as the holy mantras during celebration.
